In considering the relationship between ‘faith and thinking.’ It can be said that we often have ‘faith without thinking’ and we ‘think without faith.’
The process of thinking is related to our minds whilst what we feel can be associated with the heart. In Psalm 63 v 6 we are encouraged to dwell, ponder and think on the Lord.
It may be said that there is ‘blind faith’ and ‘pure thinking.’
Wisdom may be likened to common sense. We might be very intellectual but lack basic common sense. On the other hand we may have lots of common sense without being academically clever. Wisdom exists in the palaces of Kings and Queens. It resides in the corridors of power. It is on the shop floor, high office block, market square and in our homes. Faith and thinking may compete against each other but wisdom looks to bring people and situations together.
In a media driven world Philippians 4 v 8 encourages us to think on things that are praise worthy. This compares to all the negative vibes that come our way and affect our thoughts, feeling and actions. Depression and a lack of well being and happiness potentially hovers over us all and can seriously affect our health.
In 1 Corinthians 14 v 20 we are asked not to think like children. Just imagine if as adults we continued to think like children. Remember the child that acted like an adult and stood out to other children. There is a natural tenancy to act and think like children and then in maturity to think and act like adults.
Peter in, 2 Peter 3 v 1, wants to arose our sincere mind by way of a reminder of how to seek faith and applied thinking, with a measure of common sense and wisdom, that will keep us safe and help us navigate through the joys and difficulties of life.
‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.’ (Proverb 1 v 7) Jesus in Luke 2 v 39 – 40 is said to have ‘grown in wisdom and strength as a young child.
So in our worship, respect and understanding of God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may our faith and thinking be united in wisdom and godly living.
Graham
