In these insights I will be journeying through the five chapters of the New Testament book: 1 Peter which I believe is very helpful and relevant to modern Christian living with all its trials and temptations.
Background
Just think for a moment about all the experiences Peter faced. He responded quickly to follow Jesus and witnessed all his sufferings and teachings but in Luke 22: 31- 34 he was to be tested by Satan and ended up betraying Jesus. However, Jesus prayed for his disciples and followers so that their faith would not fail in spite of all the opposition and suffering they faced.

Church leadership verses 1 – 5
Peter addressed himself as a fellow elder who had met the Lord. Leaders and elders who have not seen Jesus represent him to their congregations. An elder seeks to willingly care for people just like a good shepherd cares for their flock. The role is not to boss or lord it over people but to lovingly support and be an example for others to follow Jesus.

The Chief Shepherd will reward those who have been faithful with a crown of glory that will never fade away. This compares to the discussion we had concerning God’s judgment as found in Chapter 4: 17. It is important for those who are young in age and faith to be submissive to those who are older and have more experience of faith.
Question If you had an opportunity to appoint a church leader what would the job description be and why?
Stand firm in the Faith verses 6 – 11
We might think that people who are confidently proud, especially against the things of God have it all their own way. Here we must heed a warning that God is not mocked and will oppose the proud in his own way and give grace to the humble and raise them up in due season.
There are always false prophets at work in and outside the church and we have to try and discern who they are and the implications of what they are saying and teaching. We have to be alert and resist the evil one who wants to devour us and discourage us in all the sufferings we face. Once again it is God’s grace that makes the difference and will bring restoration, strength and a steadfastness for us to continue in the Christian faith.
Question It seems that it is very cool to be proud in every area of life. What is the difficulty in being too proud?
Final Greetings verses 12 – 14
Peter acknowledges the practical help of Silas who has been like a brother to him. Peter writes to encourage his readers about the true grace of God which will enable us to hold on to our faith in times of testing. Peter shares greetings from Babylon (the Roman church) alongside those from Mark, encouraging all, as a sign of Christian hospitality, to greet each other with a kiss of love. Peter ends his letter offering “Peace to all of who are in Christ.”

Question How do we recognise false prophets in and outside the church? How can we stand firm in the faith?
