From The Heart – Mindless Violence in Southport

There is a vibrant sea of flowers which have been placed to show respect, sadness and utter despair. The news reporters don’t know what to say. Who can say anything to make this horrendous situation any better?

Thank you PA Media

Violence erupted during last night (29 July 2024). In Southport it was unprecedented, but not so in the world. We live in shocking times! History shows that these times are being repeated, that evil and it is Evil has always been around.

Jesus gave us a command, “Love one another as I have loved you”. If each nation were to follow that command, then what happened in Southport and indeed every other conflict would be eradicated. The unrest which continues throughout relationships and the world, just wouldn’t exist.

If we allowed the love that Jesus left us with, to grow, to envelope our families and extended families, our countrymen and other nations – what colour would the world be? It wouldn’t be dark with sinister undertones. Sun would shine regardless of the weather! If all people were taught to feel valued and loved, then Jesus would have a way in.

Southport is rebelling against the violence, not by retaliation but by pulling together, to rebuild, to heal their community. To gently fight against the evil which has tried to manifest and feed on the fear of the people, who are most closely connected to what has happened.

The horrendous attack on the children and those trying to protect them, plus the wider community, will be scarred for ever more. We can see God’s hand working in those people trying to rebuild the town and in some small way attempt to bring healing.

Bridges built between the different faith groups are important. The attack on the children was not a result of colour or creed. Contributory factors are more to do with a break down of law and order, Christian values in society and God not being respected as a higher authority in our lives.

St George’s Church Lord Street Southport

God placed goodness in humanity and if we respond to him in a positive way He will grow that goodness to be beyond anything we could ever imagine.
